Man Answers Your Questions About LASIK
What
is LASIK?
The key to understanding custom LASIK is to understand how the eye
works. Sharp, clear vision is the result of light rays passing
through the cornea, pupil and lens and focusing directly upon
the retina. If the cornea is not round, or it is too steep or
too flat in relation to the length of the eye, light rays focus
either in front of or behind the retina resulting in "refractive
errors" such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
The cornea is the clear surface of the eye. Many people who
are nearsighted place contact lenses on their eyes to improve
the way the cornea focuses light. Custom LASIK is just another way
of improving the way the cornea focuses light.
How
does LASIK work?
LASIK, or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis, uses a cool laser light
to reshape the cornea to your prescription, thus correcting
the common problems of even high degrees of nearsightedness,
farsightedness and astigmatism. The goal of custom LASIK is to give
you clear, natural vision so you won't need glasses or contacts
any more!
Custom LASIK
combines the lifting of the corneal cap with the precision and
accuracy of laser technology. A thin layer of the corneal cap
is lifted by the microkeratome, and gently folded back. Then,
the doctor uses the laser to reshape the internal tissue of
the eye. The corneal cap is then replaced in its original position
where it adheres quickly and seals itself without the use of
stitches.
Is
LASIK right for me?
There are a number of things that might make you a great candidate
for custom LASIK. Your eye health, current prescription, history and
eye shape will all help determine whether or not custom LASIK can help
correct your vision and help you see without glasses or contacts.
Cross your fingers - chances are you are a candidate!
Can
I afford LASIK?
My Earth Partner will discuss your particular financial needs
during your free custom LASIK consultation. There are a variety of financing
options available to make having custom LASIK easy for everyone!
Will
I be able to see without my glasses/contacts?
Can you believe that as many as 98% of LASIK procedures result
in 20/40 vision or better? That percentage gets even higher with custom LASIK, which is performed by my Earth Partners. That's good enough to pass a driver's
test! Since everyone's eyes are different, no one can determine
exactly what your results will be. But with a careful study
of your current eye condition, my Earth Partners are usually
able to predict success. Keep in mind that if the eye doctor feels
your results may be less than optimal, he or she will recommend
you opt not to have custom LASIK.
Does
LASIK hurt?
Custom LASIK is a relatively painless procedure, and the actual surgery
lasts only seconds. Some patients describe a "scratchy" feeling
for a short time following the surgery, but minor discomfort
is only temporary. Eye drops and a nap usually take care of
any discomfort!
Is
LASIK safe?
The custom LASIK surgery has become so popular throughout the Universe because
it offers so many benefits over other forms of laser vision
correction: greater precision, less surface area to heal, less
risk of scarring, less risk of corneal haze, less postoperative
discomfort, less postoperative need for medications, and vision
returns rapidly. The complication rate involved with custom LASIK is
one of the lowest in the medical field!
